A MISSION TO HELP
Dr. Timothy Murphy got his first glimpse of orthopedic medicine as
a child when he tagged along as his father – Daniel Murphy, MD,
one of the founding partners at Murphy Wainer Orthopedic
Specialists – saw patients and covered sporting events. “As a kid, I
would go on hospital rounds and to games where he was the
orthopedic physician covering the Greensboro Monarchs ECHL
hockey team, which I thought was really cool,” the younger Dr.
Murphy recalls.
By the time he was a high school student, Timothy Murphy had
spent time shadowing his father and other surgeons – and had
solidified his decision to enter the “family business.” During his
high school career as an all-conference wrestler and all-state
lacrosse player at Greensboro Day School, he also got a view of
orthopedic medicine from the patient’s perspective – when he
needed surgery to reconstruct a torn ACL.
In medical school, he earned multiple honors while further
developing a passion for helping people. As a medical student, he
traveled to Nicaragua and Costa Rica on medical mission trips
because, he says, “I think it’s important that we give back.”
As a doctor in his hometown, Dr. Murphy enjoys meeting patients,
assessing their conditions, and helping them get back to work and
other activities. “One of the great things about my work is that I
can help people get back to doing the things they enjoy – whether
it is jogging in the neighborhood or playing basketball on an elite
team,” he says.
In his spare time, Dr. Murphy likes to spend time with his wife,
Lindsey Murphy, MD, and their three children. His hobbies include
woodworking, watching and playing sports, running, biking, and
participating in triathlons and other races.
